چکیده

Abstract About half of the lunar meteorites in our collections are feldspathic breccias. Acquiring geochronologic information from these breccias is challenging due to their low radioactive‐element contents and often polymict nature. We used high‐spatial‐resolution (5 μm) NanoSIMS (nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry) U‐Pb dating technique date micro‐zircons Dhofar 1528 1627. Three spots two zircon grains show a discordia with an upper intercept at 4354 ± 76 Ma lower 332 1407 (2 σ , MSWD = 0.01, p 0.91). 1627 define 3948 30 691 831 0.40, 0.53). Both samples likely experienced shock metamorphism caused by impacts. Based on clastic nature, lack recrystallization consistent Pb‐Pb dates zircons 1528, interpreted as crystallization age its Mg‐suite igneous precursor. Some poikilitic texture, matrix impact melt, so corresponds event, Imbrium basin‐forming event. These data first radiometric ages for demonstrate that situ (high spatial resolution) has potential extracting geochronological about activities events

Implications for the origins of pure anorthosites found in the feldspathic lunar meteorites, Dhofar 489 group

Remote observation by the reflectance spectrometers onboard the Japanese lunar explorer Kaguya (SELENE) showed the purest anorthosite (PAN) spots (>98% plagioclase) at some large craters. Mineralogical and petrologic investigations on the feldspathic lunar meteorites, Dhofar 489 and Dhofar 911, revealed the presence of several pure anorthosite clasts. A comparison with Apollo nearside samples o...

New Geochemical Constraints on Pairing of the Dhofar 961 Clan of Lunar Meteorites

Compositionally and petrologically, Dhofar 961, a glassy-matrix regolith breccia, is unique among lunar meteorites (Fig. 1) and distinct from any Apollo sample. In a recent paper [1], we make two observations. (1) If the ~65 known lunar meteorites represent even as few as only 30 source craters on the Moon, then there is still an 80% chance that at least one is from the South PoleAitken basin. ...

Dhofar 304, 305, 306 and 307: New Lunar Highland Meteorites from Oman

Introduction: Several lunar highland meteorites were found in the Dhofar region of Oman. Here we report the first data on the petrography and mineralogy of four new lunar stones, Dhofar 304, 305, 306 and 307. Dh-304 was found close to Dh-025 and 301, whereas Dh-305, 306 and 307 were recovered nearby Dh-081, 280, 302 and 303. The new meteorites are moderately weathered, impact-melt breccias. No ...

Petrography and Mineralogy of Dhofar 1428 Lunar Highland Regolith Breccia

Introduction: Dhofar 1428 is a lunar feldspathic breccia found in 2006. Bunch et al. [1] briefly described mineral chemistry of Dhofar 1428. Korotev and Zeigler [2] analyzed its bulk FeO and Sm compositions. Here, we report such detailed data for Dhofar 1428. Results and Discussion: Dhofar 1428 has a distinct breccia texture with numerous fragments of rock, mineral, and glass all welded by a gl...

Lunar Meteorite Dhofar 026: a Second-generation Impact Melt

Introduction: The meteorite Dhofar 026 (Dh26) was found in Oman in January, 2000 [1]. It is a clastpoor, anorthositic, crystalline melt breccia with no fusion crust and little terrestrial weathering. Solar wind abundance measurements show that it is unpaired with the lunar regolith breccia Dhofar 025 [2]. The Dh26 oxygen isotopic composition indicates its lunar origin [3], while its majorand tr...
